A bare-chested UPDF soldier is laid on a wooden plank with spikes and a similar plank is placed on his chest.
A big concrete brick placed atop the upper plank is then split with a hammer as several people in the crowd close their eyes in fear. but the soldier, whom the crowd expects to be bleeding from nail-inflicted wounds, stands up unscathed and laughs.
Many others performed kung-fu or karate tactics.
The brick-splitting and other extraordinary displays of the Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) excited all including President Yoweri Museveni and army commander Lt. Gen. Aronda Nyakairima on Wednesday at Karama infantry training school in Mubende district.
A North Korean military team led by Brig. Li Chang Song is teaching martial art to PGB soldiers to enhance their skills in self-defence and protection of the president and VIPs.
The Koreans said similar training in their country takes a year but in Uganda it will end after four months.
“Ugandans adapt quickly because they are stronger,†Li Chang said through an interpreter. The team was convinced to come by Maj. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Museveni said he did martial arts in the 1970s with Lt. Gen. Salim Saleh and Maj. Gen. Ivan Koreta.
“We used it in the NRA to carry out special missions, but it was not passed on. Assimilate and retain this knowledge,†he told soldiers.
