ABOUT 150 mobile phones were confiscated at Makerere University during the last semester’s examination period.

The move followed the enforcement of the university’s long-awaited regulation forbidding students from carrying phones into exam rooms.

Hellen Kawesa , the public relations officer, said phones were prohibited in exam rooms.

“It is examination malpractice to carry a cellphone into an exam room. Some students use them to send and receive answers through SMS,” she said recently. She said the regulation was clearly outlined in the exam timetable and answer books and the penalty was expulsion.

Sources said over 70 mobiles were confiscated from the Faculty of Arts, 50 from the Faculty of Law and 30 from other centres.
