Decentralisation and federalism may encourage double taxation on properties that are taxed by the central and local governments, a tax consultant has warned.
Stanley Njoroge, a tax consultant with Deloitte Consulting, said during a seminar at Hotel Africana recently that local governments tax properties and businesses, which are taxable by the Government, to raise enough revenue to facilitate their responsibilities.

Energy to hold
THE energy ministry will hold a regional conference on gasoline next month, the commissioner for petroleum supply and development, Ben Twodo, said in an interview.
The conference, which will bring together heads of nations and fuel companies in the region, is aimed at coming up with a strategy to phase out leaded fuel in East Africa.

THE Government has advanced a sh40m bonus to Mukono town council for proper utilisation and accountability of Local Government Development Programme funds in the 2004/05 financial year. Johnson Ssenyonga, the mayor, said the funds would be used for roads, schools and health centres.

ACCORD will construct rain water harvesting tanks worth $69,028 (sh120m) in Mbarara, the country coordinator, George Omona, has said.

Video hall owners to get loans
DFCU Bank will give loans to video and cinema operators to enable them upgrade to standards prescribed by the Broadcasting Council.
The head of the Union of Video Owners and Operators Association, Salimin Damulira, told reporters recently.
