ILLEGAL stone crushers operating on Tororo rock have caused extensive damage to the nearby St. Anthony hospital, the out-going medical superintendent said on Friday, writes Nathan Etengu.

Dr. Agnes Anyait said a wash-down of loose soils from the quarry had damaged the hospital’s buildings and compound.
“The soil has been washed down to our compound, thereby increasing the maintenance costs,” Anyait said in a letter to the district environment office.
She said the stone crushers had not heeded a directive by the district environment officer to stop the practice.

“The hospital management does not know who is behind this activity and attempts to stop the men from harvesting stones have been in vain,” Anyait said.

The stone crushers, however, said they were not aware of the damage caused to the hospital.

“Management has never informed us of the damage caused to the buildings,” Michael Okuga said.

He said 10 of them had identified the western slopes of the rock as a possible site for harvesting more stones.
