Gold eludes Uganda at African weight-lifting championship

ISMAIL Katamba (56kg) and Irene Ajambo’s (69kg) three silver medals remained Uganda’s best performance as the Africa Senior Weightlifting championship drew towards the end at Didi’s World yesterday.
The competition sponsored by Imperial Hotels, Rio Insurance and Eleiko Silver Dragon ended late in the evening to pave way for the African congress due at Imperial Hotel this morning.
Katamba, failed to beat Cameroon’s Koum Koum but outclassed Algerian Al Hamoud to silver in both the continental senior and junior championships.
Khalid Batusa (77kg) climaxed day three by winning Uganda’s first Africa junior boys’ gold medal.
Hawa Nakiganda and Ajambo had won gold medals in the girl’s category. Uganda has won 27 gold, 15 silver and three bronze in the East African category.
Cameroon was by press time still leading the Africa Senior men’s medal table with nine gold.
