THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, has urged the public to be vigilant today, saying there could be bad elements who would want to take advantage of the day.

THE Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala, has urged the public to be vigilant today, saying there could be bad elements who would want to take advantage of the day.

Katumba said the Police had got assistance from the UPDF, who will escort the materials and officials especially in the north and Karamoja, while the Prisons staff and local government Police will help at the polling stations.

He said the Police air wing was not equipped, adding that the Army Commander had agreed to put the army helicopter on standby yesterday.

Katumba, who was briefing the observers of the today’s referendum said, “terrorism is a big threat and we are not far from those threats. I urge everybody to be vigilant and report any suspected cases to the police.”

Over 250 observers, both local and international, attended the briefing at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

Wamala said the Police with assistance from other security agencies had the capacity to maintain law and order.

He said a contingency plane had been set up to counter any criminal elements, including demonstrations and strikes and threats on persons.

He said election security committees had been set up at national, regional and district levels to keep law and order.

Katumba cited Kibaale as a problematic area where much attention had been focused.
