SUSPICION surrounded the burial of slain Democratic Party (DP) youth Vincent Lugonvu in Kayunga, Wakiso district, on Thursday, with party officials pointing accusing fingers at their lot.
Kawempe north MP Latif Ssebagala (below) said Lugonvu’s murderers were among their lot.
Lugonvu, 23, has been the secretary general of the DP Youth brigade affiliated to Nasser Sebaggala’s disbanded DP faction that has been involved in running battles with the Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), affiliated to the main faction.
DP President General Paul Ssemogerere said Lugonvu’s death was still shrouded in mystery, and it was incumbent upon all party loyalists to solve it.
“We are in a very difficult period of mourning our colleague Lugonvu but it seems his murderers are in our very midst, to ensure that their mission was accomplished,†Ssebagala told mourners.
“We all have the responsibility to discover the motives, not for the sake of revenge but to save the lives of our people,†Ssemogerere said.
Lugonvu died on Tuesday at Mulago hospital, where he was taken after thugs beat him at his sister’s residence in namasuba on Monday night.
Ssemogerere said Lugonvu’s death was a test to the party, his parents and siblings and that DP had in a short time lost a number of officials like Patrick Musisi and a son of their official, Gerald Kayondo.
He said the murder could have been the work of a cell, created to not only kill Lugonvu, but many of them.
“We have to stand firm, because Lugonvu is not the first, nor last one. We have to be firm because more tests are coming our way,†he said.
