By Elvis Basudde Celebrated folk music composer, “Lord†Fred Sebatta, is hitting unprecedented heights with new hot releases. Before the storm is over for Teriba Ddogo album, which he released early this year, he has emerged yet again with another hot album, Kilimanjaro.
Nobody who hears this new album can refuse to praise Sebatta for the mythical and metaphorical lyrics he uses to spice up his music, a thing that places him in his own class. The scramble for this album when it was released recently is proof that it is a hit. According to Ali Mwanje of AKM Centre, the day the album was, released, over 80 cartons with 200 pieces each were sold.
“The album has a strong message that is conveyed using humour,†says Mwanje. The song is a transition from kadongokamu beats to contemporary rhythms. It is pop, danceable and a crossbreed of some dancehall, reggae and rumba: “I am trying to change my style to a contemporary one just like modern artistes do,†said Sebatta. Songs on the album include Kilimanjaro, Omulimu gwomumutwe, Bindekere, Nviira kumukazi, Hanifa and Enkuuma yamaka.
Kirimanjaro is about women who copy the Western culture of stripping themselves naked. Sebatta uses Kilimanjaro metaphorically to mean HIV virus. He says irresponsible behaviour can lead to contracting the virus.
Promiscuity is the subject in the Nviira kumukazi track. Sebatta laughs derisively at promiscuos men. He advises men not to adore adultery. It says a man’s sure death certificate is getting involved with a married woman.
Sebatta’s music is based mainly on the daily problems that people face. It creates a sibylline atmosphere that leaves the listener’s imagination free to roam with the melodies. Ends
