Liar Liar; 86 minutes; Comedy Available on DVD and VHS Reviewed by: Roger Mugisha As Liar Liar opens, five-year-old Max Reid (Justin Cooper) is busy explaining to his class what his father does. Although Max claims his father’s profession is being a liar, the teacher corrects him by saying Max must have meant lawyer. The story demonstrates that Max was right. His dad, Fletcher (Jim Carrey), lies non-stop. Fletcher is an insatiable workaholic, who will do anything to advance his career and lying is his greatest tool. However, Fletcher is convincing about his love for his son. The chemistry between them is genuine. Divorced from his wife Audrey (Maura Tierney), Fletcher’s part-time relationship with his son has just enough pathos to make the humour more involving. Max does not approve of his father’s lying so he makes a single wish as he blows out his birthday candles, “I wish, for just one day, Dad couldn’t tell a lie.†Feeling compelled to tell the truth can get a person in more trouble than you would imagine. By the time Max made his wish, Fletcher was dealing with a custody hearing where his client was suing her husband for half his possessions yet she had been adulterous. Although Fletcher tries to sustain his repertoire as a skilled lawyer, he is overtaken by the will to tell the truth. Tagline: I wish, for just one day, Dad couldn’t tell a lie. Lesson: The things you say to your children dictate their future lifestyle. Ends
