WEIGHTLIFTER Irene Ajambo has won the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) monthly award for the first time since last year.
The schoolteacher in Jinja emerged sportsperson of July after securing 280 votes against 265 for striker Anthony Bongole, who took second place.
Ajambo (above), the 2003 top USPA weightlifter was awarded the accolade after she collected nine medals in the just concluded Africa and East Africa championships at Didi’s World.
She competed in the 69kg category and gathered three gold medals in juniors’, three silvers in seniors’ events and three other gold medals in the East African competitions.
And although she tied with national teammate Haula Nakiganda, the journalists preferred Ajambo for her seniority.
Bongole was nominated for his outstanding role in Kampala City Council football club’s dramatic comeback to qualify for semifinals of the City Tyres Super League.
In both occasions of the quarterfinals, Bongole came from the bench to score two goals in the first leg and one in the return match to push the Lugogo side to the semifinal against SC Villa today.
Basketballer Judith Akoth and rally driver Riyaz Kurji were other contenders of the monthly awards but managed third and last places respectively.
