State House names Ugandan victims

State House has named the Ugandans killed in the Saturday plane crash as Col. Peter Nyakairu, Maj. Patrick Kiggundu, Captain Paul Kiyimba, Lt. Johnson Munanura, Lillian Kabeije, Samuel Bakowa and Corporal Hassan Kiiza, reports Alfred Wasike and Emmy Allio.

Samuel Andrew Bakowa (above)
*Born on January 3, 1963.
*1986, graduated from Makerere University with a BA degree in lingustics.
*March 1987, joined the foreign affairs ministry as a High Executive Officer.
*1988 appointed Foreign Service Officer and posted to the Protocol and Consular Services Department.
*December 1995, promoted to Foreign Service Officer Grade V.
*Between April and May 1997 went on a course on “Working with International Organisations” in France.
*June 1998, transferred to the Department of Finance and Administration as a transport officer.
*May 1999, posted to the Uganda mission in Libya, Tripoli as Second Secretary and Head of Chancery.
*December 2000, promoted to Foreign Service Officer Grade IV
*2001 promoted to Foreign Service Officer Grade III.
* Was protocol officer in State House since December 2004.
Lillian Kabaije was a flight attendant on the Presidential jet and helicopter from April 1, 2000 to her death.
*Born on August 28, 1978
*Came to Kampala SSS for her A Level.
*Joined the Crane College and Computer Centre in Kampala.
*Trained at the home of Gulfstream aircraft in Savannah, Georgia, USA.
*Trained on Kenya Airways aircraft.
Cpl. Hassan Kiiza was a signaler attached to the Presidential Guard Brigade.
A PGB spokesperson, Edison Kwesiga said, “We don’t discuss the lives of our soldiers in the press.”
Col. Peter Nyakairu
*Age 58, born in Kabarole
*Joined army in 1969, trained in Russia, China and Belarus. Was in Russia when Idi Amin toppled the Dr. Milton Obote I regime.
*After 1985 coup he flew Dr. Obote to Zambia and returned home in 1987 to join the National Resistance Army (NRA)’s air force wing.
*He has been the pilot of the presidential helicopter since 1997. But regularly he has also carried out bombing raids on Lord’s Resistance Army hideouts
Maj. Patrick Kiggundu
*Born in 1944 in Kasana village, Ntungamo district, to Petero Bahororo and Vagileyini Bitanaki.
*Joined air force in 1971 and trained in Russia as flight engineer. He received further training at Entebbe airbase, Libya and Israel.
*Was captured by Tanzanian authorities in 1979 while on a bombing raid. Released in 1983.
*Is survived by a widow (Mbabazi Kiggundu) and five children.
*Was the flight engineer on the fateful plane.
Capt. Paul Kiyimba
*Born on January 10, 1964 to Rev. Kamya Mulekwa and Margaret Kamya of Namagabi village in Bugerere in Kayunga district.
*Joined air force in 1998 as a trainee pilot after completion of Aptitude test in Nakasongola.
*Acquired private pilot license after training at the airbase in Entebbe.
*Underwent further training in Russia, Ukraine, and South Africa.
*Was the co-pilot on the fateful plane.
*He is survived by a widow (Sarah Namusoke Kiyimba) and three children, the youngest being three years.
