A FORMER Iganga deputy resident district commissioner (RDC), Justin Ouma Adea, is being held on suspicion that he was smuggling contraband cigarettes worth sh10m.
Lt. Bahoku Barigye, the Special Revenue Protection Services spokesman, said on Monday that Ouma was arrested with an armed escort driving on the Namayemba-Musita route in Mayuge district.
Ouma was Iganga deputy RDC from 2000 to 2002 when he was transferred to the mobilisation desk in Kampala RDC’s office.
Cpl. Bosco Olonyo, who was found with Ouma, told the press at the URA offices in Iganga town that the administration officer at the NRM secretariat had ordered him to offer Ouma protection while on a mobilisation tour in eastern Uganda.
“The police may prosecute him but the car and the cigarettes are State property,” Barigye said.
