MAKERERE University yesterday released the partial admission list of the 12,000 private students for this academic year, reports Fortunate Ahimbisibwes.
Hundreds of prospective students yesterday crammed the university notice boards to view the long-awaited list just two days to the official opening of the academic year.
However, by evening, only the list of those admitted for science programmes had been displayed.
The New Vision has, however, obtained the full official list, part of which it has published (see pullout inside).
The deputy academic registrar in charge of admissions, Elisha Obela, said the delay in releasing the list was caused by a breakdown in their information technology system. He said the full list would be put up last evening.
“We are sorry about the delay but we hope that the students we have admitted will be able to report on 20th,†he said.
With a 10% reduction in the intake, officials said about half of the applicants were left out because of the competition.
Last year, about 15,000 students were admitted on the 115 programmes but the University Council said the 83-year- old institution lacked capacity to handle a similar figure in the coming years.
“This year was very competitive because of the Government’s science policy and the reduction in the intake,†he said.
Under the policy, most government sponsorship has been channelled to science courses.
Although less than 1,000 arts students were admitted on the government sponsorship scheme, more than 6,000 have been admitted on the private scheme.
The university, however, is still grappling with an increase in tuition fees, which is awaiting President Yoweri Museveni’s approval. A joint cabinet and Makerere university committee earlier this month agreed on a sh215,000 increase on all the programmes.
