Insurance brokers’ commission increased to sh5.8b from sh4.7b in 2002 with about half of the commission belonging to AON Uganda Limited.

AON, which has branches in several countries, topped the list with a commission of sh.2.7b followed by Alexander Forbes, another global insurance brokerage firm, with sh893m.

An insurance broker is an agent who sales insurance policies, links clients to insurance companies and earns a commission for bringing the two together.

Uganda has 26 insurance brokerage firms.

Uganda Insurance Commission’s deputy commissioner, George Okotha, attributed the dominance of some companies to better marketing strategies.

Five Star Insurance bagged sh300m, Interstate Services sh252m and Inter-continental Insurance Brokers sh251m.

The increase in the brokers commission follows a rise in the industry’s premium from sh62b in 2003 to sh80b in 2004.
