Luweero residents were on Tuesday moved when a giant mvule tree, which has been acting as a popular shelter in Kasana suburb, was cut down.
The tree, which is believed to have been towering over the small busy township for over 60 years, had Kavule LC1 named after it.
In addition to being home for marabou storks, the giant tree, hitherto believed by residents to be untouchable, had also been a popular shelter for bodaboda cyclists, bicycle repairers, motorcycle mechanics and idlers.
Hundreds of residents, who abandoned their businesses, curiously watched from about 100 metres away, as two lumberers from Kampala chopped down the branches and later the trunk.
The trunk, measuring about five metres in diameter, collapsed with a loud sound that forced onlookers to scamper.
The lumberers were paid sh300,000 by Mulindwa, the owner of the plot.
Luweero town authorities, who had earlier turned down several requests by the plot owner to fell the tree, said they referred him to the district works department officials, who gave him a go a head.
