THE High Court has placed Dr. Aggrey Kiyingi’s youngest daughter under the care of her maternal aunt, Dr. Eva Kasirye Alemu.

A director of the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics, Kasirye applied for guardianship of the 15-year-old girl (names withheld). She is in S.2.

Kasirye’s counsel, David Mulumba, told Justice Okumu Wengi that the girl lacked parental care following the July 11 murder of her mother, Robinah Kiyingi.

Kasirye appeared in court with Kiyingi’s other daughter, Samalie Kiyingi, who unsuccessfully pleaded for the exclusion of the press from the proceedings. The girl was reported to be still at school.

Mulumba said Dr. Kiyingi had “not discussed nor cared about the future of the child”, prompting Okumu to ask, “Is that fair? Is it necessary for this application?”

Mulumba defended the comments, arguing, “One would wonder why one wants to take guardianship of the child when the father is there.”

Okumu granted the guardianship but directed that the girl be produced in court to express her wish on the matter.
