Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa has called for a speedy regional integration to foster economic development in Africa.

He thanked President Yoweri Museveni for his leadership, pointing out that Uganda’s economic strides contributed to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.

Mkapa, accompanied by his wife Anna, was bidding farewell to Ugandans as his presidential term ends in November.

He called upon East African leaders to ensure that the community did not collapse again.

Mkapa, who is the chairperson of the Summit of the EAC, was on Wednesday hosted to a state dinner by President Museveni and his wife Janet at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Mkapa said, “The people of East African should at all levels be involved in the affairs of the community, while the leaders should ensure that the community does not collapse again.”

Parliament Speaker Edward Ssekandi and Deputy Speaker Rebecca Kadaga attended. Others were Chief justice Benjamin Odoki, premier Prof. Apolo nsibambi and NRM vice-chairman Moses Kigongo.

Museveni commended Mkapa for maintaining the heritage of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who stood for patriotism, independence, empowerment and modernisation of Africa.

“The zeal of President Mkapa to successfully uphold the heritage that was spearheaded by the late Mwalimu Nyerere has helped to further solidify the excellent relationship between Uganda and Tanzania,” Museveni said.
