Democratic Party (DP) president-general Dr. Paul Ssemogerere yesterday named a national taskforce to re-organise the party ahead of a delegates’ conference later this year.
It comprises Prof. Frederick Ssempebwa, Prof. Richard Otto, Prof. Joseph Mukiibi, J.B. Kakooza and Francis Bwengye, Joseph Balikuddembe and Issa Kikungwe.
Others are Robert Kitariko, Nobert Mao, Winnie Makumbi, Erias Lukwago, Irene Sekisonge, Kenneth Kakande, Florence Bagunywa Nkalubo, Evaristo Nyanzi, Hajji Mudirikat Mukasa, Hajji Ali Sserunjogi and Ben Otto.
Addressing a press conference at Speke Hotel, Ssemogerere said the task force would revitalise and rejuvenate the leadership at all levels.
“The taskforce is also charged with reformulating the party programme and developing the party election manifesto,” he said.
Party officials looked uneasy when Hajji Nasser Sebaggala arrived unexpectedly at the press conference.
He found Prof. Mukiibi, Kikungwe, Sebuliba and Balikuddembe outside waiting for Ssemogerere and shook hands with them without uttering a word.
He sat next to party treasurer Damiano Lubega but the latter went to sit next to Kakooza on the opposite side.
Sebaggala, who sat in the front row, read newspapers. Ssemogerere did not see Sebaggala immediately when he arrived, but left his seat on the high table moments later to greet him.
Kawempe North MP and Sebaggala’s brother, Latif Ssebagala, attended.
Latif and Makindye East MP Michael Mabikke were the only MPs at Sebaggala’s manifesto launch on Tuesday.
Prof. Otto moderated the press conference.
Ssemogerere rejected a proposal that Sebaggala explains why he launched his manifesto.
“This is my press conference. You can ask him any other time. It is even not fair to him,” he said.
Sebaggala welcomed the taskforce. “I have no problem with the committee as long as they are working. I have many people to represent me on the committee. My brother is there. I am above that committee,” he said.
