Kakira Sugar Works the leading sugar manufacturers has earmarked $45m for a major expansion and electricity co-generation programme to boost production, Chris Omony and Ben Mugisha reports.
Manubhai Madhvani, the joint managing director of the Madhvani Group of Companies subsidiary, said in an interview recently that the expansion would also curb on the persistent sugar shortages.
He said up to 10,000 hectares would be cultivated, up from 8,500 hectares. Madhavani said 4,000 tonnes of cane would be crushed daily, from 3,500 tonnes. “Our sugar production will increase from 95,000 tonnes per annum to over 130,000 tonnes,” Madhvani said. He said the development would also boost the out growers contributing to 60% of the cane, from 50%.
“We are concerned as the leading sugar manufacturers about the trends in the sector regarding prices and other related problems. This has been a result of our annual inevitable six weeks ‘off crop maintenance’ programme lasting six weeks which was inevitable,” he said.
He said with the newly acquired mill, the problem would be solved for good.
