THE Police in Hoima district on Wednesday shot dead a soldier attached to the Special Revenue Police Service (SRPS) and an army deserter, after they allegedly murdered two brothers before going on a robbing spree.

The two were gunned down in Kiryambogo in a hunt mounted by the Police and area residents, following a wave of terror allegedly meted by the two and others.

Three other UPDF deserters, who are said to have worked with the two have also been arrested and are being held at Hoima Police Station, Police Spokesman Assuman Mugenyi said.

The deserter, only identified as One,n was killed moments before the Police caught up with Moses Uyik, who, with handcuffs, tried to dive into River Hoimo, prompting the Police to open fire, injuring him. He bled to death.

Uyik was attached to the SRPS based in Wanseko and Butiaba landing sites in Masindi district, Mugenyi said.

He had been arrested by the Police and had offered to lead them to where he had hidden the gun, but upon reaching the river, decided to take the plunge to safety, which turned fatal.

Mugenyi identified those arrested as Jackson Ogwang, Christopher Byaruhanga and Juma Onega, who together with Onen joined Uyik at Ndegu landing site after he had shot dead the two brothers near river Rutoka and made away with their bicycle.

“They joined him and went on a drinking spree before they went on rampage robbing residents,” Mugenyi said.
