Your editorial was insensitive, uncalled for

SIR — Your editorial “George Bush’s wake-up call” which blamed hurricanes on the Bush administration’s environmental policies was a little insensitive.

Despite the fact that scientific evidence increasingly links
catastrophic disasters like Hurricane Katrina to global warming with former Vice-President Al Gore as chief spokesperson of that school of thought, lashing out
at ‘Americans’ as the catastrophe was unfolding was insensitive and uncalled for.

Instead, Ugandans should have joined the rest of the world in extending condolences and expressing support to the poor and less fortunate caught on the wrong side of the ‘fault lines of the American Society’ as Tim Russert of NBC Washington Bureau rightly put it.

Civility and compassion would call to save grand theories for another day.
