Mwiri are the best SIR - George William Kayondo, school headmaster from 1985 to 1992, often referred to the Busoga College Mwiri Cricket team as second to none. Although Kayondo passed away without realising that dream, Mwiri went on to win cricket schools’ titles a record 11 times in 13 years since. Mwiri feeds the national team, with names like Kenneth Kamyuka, Junior Kwebiiha, Benjamin Musoke, Keith Legesi and Hamza Saleh now famous. During our time when we played and lost, it was normal. But, in 2001 when Mwiri lost to Budo, most of the players cried. This years school’s cricket week will go down in history as one the most exciting. In the past, competition was mainly between Mwiri and Budo This time, Kololo SSS, Makerere College, Jinja SSS, Aga Khan and St James all had chances of winning. Mwiri actually showed the character of a champion to win past stronger sides like Kololo. When greatness clashes with greatness, mere mortals can only look back and admire. Its certainly the beginning of a golden era for Ugandan Cricket. The U-19 team are at the World Cup again. Henry Mugisha hmugisha@liberty.co.ug
SIR - We need to take advantage of all the excitement after Dorcus Inzikuru’s victory in the 3000m steeplechase final at the world athletics championship to focus on the development of the sports infrastructure. There are so many talented Ugandans whose skills cannot be harnessed because they are far away from facilities that are mainly found in town centres. We should create talent development centres in Arua and Kapchorwa so that we get more Inzzis. Musa Katende Kasawo
