Ball on the street
STREET basketball finally found its way to Kampala last Friday as Hip-Hop artistes and basketball players united to launch the maiden event. Street basketball features mad skills (dribbling skills), Street shoot-out, dunking, dancing and B-ball 'en' rap competitions, all on the basketball court.
Donned in basketball jerseys, the youngsters who turned out for the event made YMCA in Wandegeya look like an African-American favourite hang-out in Los Angels. Hip-Hop cuts by some of the top American stars that blared from the speakers that surrounded the YMCA basketball court, made life worth living.
However, organisers made a bad timing for the event as their main audience, students, have already returned to school. But despite the small audience, budding Hip-Hop artistes like Abrams, Bataka Underground, Ill, Pay me, Black Rain, JB, PPI and many other local up-and-coming artistes, were able to put up great performances during the 'free style' rap competition. Street ball is a brainchild of basketball players in Harlem City, USA, which started about a century ago. Before, it was called the Black street ball. It was later adopted by End World basketball players (US), and given massive promotion and more meaning byHarlem Globe Totters basketball players, also based in the US.

Inter-varsity flop
The Miss Inter University beauty (Makerere, Kyambogo, Nkumba, MUBS, KIU and Mukono) Pangeant, was supposed to be one of the biggest events on the social calendar, going by the hype it attracted. But to our dismay, the pageant turned out to be one of the most spectacular flops of the year! The lucky winner would have driven home a Toyota Curren, while the first and second runners-up would have got a year's tuition fees to the tune of sh1.5m and a home theatre system.
Revellers who had turned out for the event at Lugogo Oval Cricket ground returned home in tears as they 'cried' for the sh10,000 they had paid. But the beauty pageant seemed predestined for a big flop: According to the adverts, the event was slated to start at 7:00pm with the gates open as early as 2:00pm. But by 10:00pm, the grounds were still empty with about ten revellers miserably waiting for the kick off. Not even the Kenyan musician, Redsan who was supposed to be the top performer had flown in. Among the local artistes, only Bebe Cool was around. When it clocked 11:00pm, event organizer Marylene Mungereza switched the music off. Without any performance, catwalk or any prize given, that marked the end of the event.
