THE Government should ban buveera (polythene bags) before the country starts begging for aid to dig them from the soils, Mbarara municipality MP John Arimpa Kigyagi has said.

He cited an announcement made by the national environmental management authority’s (NEMA) western region information officer, Jeconious Musingwire, that NEMA had resolved to phase out light polythene papers from the Ugandan market by 2010.

Musingwire said the proposal to ban buveera was already before cabinet. He said buveera were the most degrading pollutants of the environment because they interfered with the percolation of water into the soil, thus starving crops of water.

He said buveera could stay intact in the soils for over 200 years without decomposing.

Kigyagi said the burning of ‘Buveera’ on street sides and areas of residence must stop because they emit gases that can cause cancer.
