HABITAT for Humanity on Saturday launched the construction of their 95th house for the low-income families in Budondo sub-county in Jinja district.

It is one of the houses to be built in the area under Habitat’s three-year ‘more than houses’ campaign to which MoneyGram, their local partner, contributed sh4.9m.

Launching the project, Habitat for Humanity resource development manager Joanne Muhaya said the campaign would also enhance self-reliance amongst beneficiaries.

“As a community-managed programme, each habitat home owner is involved in the physical construction of their own home and gives part of the time to help construct a house for a neighbour,” she said.

Muhaya said the payments from the beneficiaries collected over seven to 10 years is used as a revolving fund to construct a house for another family in the same community.

She said 4,295 families had benefited from the organisation, which operates in 19 districts.

A beneficiary, Ivan Kiidha, a peasant in Buyala village, said he could not afford constructing a house.
