The Nigerian Telecommunications (Nitel), has awarded Ericsson a deal worth U$46m for the expansion of its fixed-wireless CDMA 2000 IX network, writes Emmy Olaki.

The CDMA 2000 1X solution is technology designed to provide operators with a flexible, cost-effective and future-proof platform for voice and data service.

Many operators in emerging markets are turning to CDMA as a fixed-wireless solution for the local loop to contain capital expenditure and, at the same time, make it more affordable to deploy fixed-lines to a broader population.

Ericsson said in a statement recently that under the contract, Ericsson will supply Nitel with the infrastructure and services it needs to expand its fixed-wireless network in the northwest and southwest regions of Nigeria. Nitel is Nigeria’s fixed-line operator.

The expansion would enable Nitel to rollout services for fixed-wireless, voice and data connectivity.
