The ministry of health has cautioned the public that there are cases of cholera outbreaks in the districts of Kampala, Masindi, Bundibugyo, Hoima, Kotido, Kasese, Arua and Nebbi this season.

Dr. Sam Okware, the director general of health services, said in a statement on Thursday that eight new cases had been confirmed this week in Katanga and Kalerwe parishes of Kawempe division in Kampala.

“Kampala City Council has opened a new cholera treatment centre at komamboga Health Centre to manage all cholera patients in the city,” said Okware.

He advised the public to be on the alert and to report any suspected cases to the nearest health unit.

“Cholera is a serious disease characterised by profuse diarrhoea and vomiting. It kills in a short time. It is spread through eating food or taking drinks contaminated with faeces containing cholera germs,” Okware said.

The ministry urged the public to wash hands with soap and water before preparing, serving and eating food to prevent cholera spread.

The other measures to prevent the spread of cholera, the ministry said, are by eating food while it is still hot, washing hands with soap and water after using toilets and disposing all faeces, including children’s, in toilets.
