By Reuben Olita in Nairobi PLANS are at advanced stage to construct Kenya’s second port to decongest the Mombasa port, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director, Brown Ondego, said on Friday. Ondego said KPA was backing government plans for the establishment of the second port at Dongo Kundu in Mombasa, Lamu or the South Coast. He said the facility would alleviate problems faced by importers offloading goods at Mombasa port. “The decision to have a second port would help in tapping business from Sudan, Ethiopia and DR Congo,†Ondego said. He said KPA was reviewing its tariffs to address operational challenges at the port, a feat that would see Mombasa become an electronic port by next July. Ondego said a Korean firm had been contracted to install a waterfront information technology system at the port. The waterfront system is aimed at eliminating corruption through minimised human intervention. Uganda’s imports come through Mombasa and Dar Es Salaam ports. But Mombasa takes a lion’s share of all Uganda’s imports and exports. Ends
