Willy Zabasajja continued his steady return to the big stage by advancing to the second phase of the Olympiad qualifiers at the weekend.

Pius Mwinganisa and Edgar Lemerigar joined Zabasajja after the play-off at Lugogo club.

Former national champion Zabasajja, back in the game after over a two-year break, won all five games in the play-off.

Mwinganisa took three and lost two while Lemerigar won two, drew one and lost two in the play-off of six players.

The six were level at 4.5 points after the first phase to force the play-off. 18 players including 15, who advanced before the play-off, are through to the second phase. Six more players, who competed at last year’s Olympiad will also be in action.

The top 12 players will go for the third phase in January and the top six will make the trip to Italy.
