Torture victims are demanding over sh700m from the government in compensations awarded by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).

Torture victims are demanding over sh700m from the government in compensations awarded by the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).
They are demanding about sh100m more from private individuals.
The numerous awards were made following cases lodged with the UHRC by victims tortured by different security organs, government departments and individuals.
The UHRC issued its 7th annual report on human rights this week, indicating that the government has so far paid up only sh93.2m.
Violations by the Police ranked higher than those committed by other security forces and government departments at 340 cases reported.
This is followed by the UPDF with 184 cases, the Violent Crime Crack Unit with 107 cases, local government and district administration with 72 cases and private companies with 65 cases.
The others are the prisons department with 55 cases, government departments with 51 cases, Internal Security Organisation with 23 and the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence with 16.
The others are education institutions with 15 cases, NGOs, including international ones, with five cases, the judiciary with four cases and religious organisations with one complaint.
