THE Government has earmarked sh3b for the development of Wakiso secondary School for the deaf, the primary education state minister has said.
Nyombi Thembo was speaking recently at the ground-breaking ceremony for the school in Sentema, Kakiri sub-county. Vice-president Prof. Gilbert Bukenya officiated at the function.
The school, with a population of 37 students and 14 teachers, is the first government institution of higher learning for people with hearing impairment.
It was taken over by the government from makerere Secondary School for the Deaf in January.
The Vice-President’s Press Secretary, Linda Nabusayi, said the money would be used to among others put up laboratories and dormitories.
Bukenya said the NRM Government had fulfiled its pledge to people with disabilities by establishing infrastructure for them to access quality education, employment, as well as representation at all leadership levels through affirmative action.
Thembo asked Ugandans to participate in ‘education for All’ by developing a positive attitude towards children with disability instead of leaving them at home.
He said there were over 300,000 pupils with disabilities in primary schools, while 10,000 were accessing higher education.
