CITY mayor John Ssebaana Kizito has opposed the registration of the health workers’ union outside the existing union of Kampala City Council (KCC) workers, reports Florence Nakaayi.

Ssebaana, while addressing a weekly press briefing yesterday, said health workers should vacate KCC premises because their demands are illegal.

“The law says that you cannot register or recognise another trade union in an institution when there is an existing one,” he said. He said if health workers did not want to be part of the union of KCC workers, the Uganda Public Employees’ Union (UPEU), they were free to join another union.

The National Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general, L.O. Ongaba, said in a May 10, 2002 letter to the Medical Workers’ Union, “We have industrial and not craft unions and this means that all workers in KCC should be under one union, UPEU.”
