To be independent is to do something alone and live without relying on other countries. I don't think Uganda is independent, because many people here are very corrupt. When they are given money for development, they eat it. For us who don't work in government, we don't get a chance to see that money. So we have remained depending on other countries. If we work together, and build our country, we shall become independent. But I don't think that will ever happen. Maybe when the government changes. Eric Kisitu, P6 Kigowa Infant School
We are not free from colonialists because they still want to rule us. We still have many of them in Uganda and they have the big jobs, so we work under them. Jackline Achiro, P5, Police Children’s School, Ntinda
Independence means freedom. Uganda is fully independent because there is no more colonial rule and we are moving forward in development. Borrowing foreign aid does not make us lose our independence because we are going to pay back that money. Stephy Lokoto, P6, Froebel Primary School
I think Uganda is independent because we have our own president. We have freedom from other countries. Although some countries control some of our issues, we are still in control. Kyoshabire Barbara, P6 Kigowa Infant School
Uganda is totally independent because when the British were here, they used to rule us and make us do work for them. They took our plots of land. When they left, we got back everything they had taken from us and became independent. Joselyn Naggayi, P5, Froebel Primary School
I think Uganda is about 94% independent because our own president is ruling us. For the remaining 6%, we are still under the British because we still use some of their laws and their language, English. Abel Tugaine, P5, Kitante Primary School
Independence is when you can take care of yourself on your own. We are only half independent. Even though we rule ourselves, we get a lot of basic needs from other countries and we borrow a lot from them. Jangor Brian, P6, Police Children’s School, Ntinda
Independence is when a country, which was ruled by colonialists, starts ruling itself. Uganda is not independent. It is a third world country and it is getting too much foreign aid from countries like USA and Britain and we have too many foreign investors. But there is some hope for total independence if we get a better leader. Joshua Komakech, P7, Kitante Primary School
