Cabinet meets over Obote funeral arrangements

The Cabinet, chaired by President Yoweri museveni, met at State House, Nakasero on Tuesday to discuss the death of former president Milton Obote. Below is the Cabinet statement on the demise of Obote

All Ugandans have by now learnt of the death of the former President of Uganda, Dr. Apollo Milton Obote. The Government extends condolences to his wife, Mrs. Miria Obote, children, relatives and friends.
Cabinet sitting on Tuesday October 11, 2005, under the chairmanship of His Excellency the President and after a long discussion lasting more than five hours, and having reviewed the history of Uganda, came to the following conclusions:
1. That the Late former President Dr. Milton Obote is viewed differently by various sections of the Ugandan society;
2. That since the Movement Government, supported by the broadest sections of the population of Uganda, has achieved peace, economic recovery, reconciliation and security of person and property, it was considered appropriate that given the past turbulent history of Uganda, Government reiterates its commitment to national reconciliation.
Consequently, the Government has decided to accord a state funeral to the former President, Dr. Apollo Milton Obote, which will include the following:
(a) National flags on official buildings to fly at half mast on the day of burial
(b) The casket will be draped in the national flag;
(c) The casket cortege will be escorted by the Police in top-roof flash- light vehicles;
(d) The casket will be carried by ceremonially uniformed pall bearers from the Police;
(e) The body will lie in state in Parliament for eight hours;
(f) During the period the body lies in state, an official band will be in attendance playing dirges;
(g) There will be viewing of the body and signing of the condolence book by foreign dignitaries, government officials and the public at Parliament;
(h) A funeral service will be held in a recognised national place of worship;
(i) The casket will be transported by a hearse to the final resting place.
