PONSIANO Lwakataka won all eight sections of the second leg to win the Castrol-Mogas Independence rally and the national championship here yesterday.

Lwakataka, navigated by George Semakula in a Subaru Impreza, won his maiden championship in a five-year career dominated by non-finishing.

“Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. It is God and prophet Sam Kakande who have given me this victory. For me the driver I come second,” said an excited Lwakataka who recently got saved, amidst cheers from his jubilant supporters.

Lwakataka easily won the rally after championship leader Riyaz Kurji and defending champion Moses Lumala opted out of the event at the last moment following the death of Charlie Lubega’s navigator Abed Musa.

Faizal Tezikuba, also in a Subaru Impreza, took second position – 22 minutes behind Lwakataka – while Bob Robert in a Ford Pick Up claimed the third podium position.

The last round of the 2005 national championship had only six finishers of the 13 drivers that started the rally.
Mansoor Sanya and Edward Golooba, were fourth and fifth respectively. Amir Kaweesa, making his first appearance, finished sixth.

The rally that was organised by Uganda Motor Club was sponsored by Castrol and Mogas.
