NABUMALI High school on Tuesday commemorated the day riotous students set the school on fire in a violent strike.

The October 11, 2004 incident was marked with prayers and a procession in which students, teachers and non-teaching staff marched through all the institutions on Nabumali hill, saying “never again” shall such an incident occur in the school.

The school has declared it a rest day to be marked with prayers and processions.

Mbale diocese bishop, the Rev. Samwiri Wabulakha, who is also the school’s chairman board of governors and district chairman Bernard Mujasi participated in the procession.

The students set the school ablaze, burning the administration block staff quarters, library and the dining hall, purportedly in protest of lack of water.

Fifty-two students were expelled and others arraigned in court.
Wabulakha advised the residents of the school to start on a new slate and make “better history” for Nabumali.
