SAM Walusimbi, the new national U-19 head coach, is confident his boys will match the world standards in the International Cricket Council (ICC) youth World Cup slated for next year in Sri Lanka.

The ICC released the World Cup draw that has Uganda grouped with defending champions Pakistan, 1998 runners up New Zealand and Bangladesh in the 16-team championship.

Walusimbi, who replaced Andrew Meya, now U-19 physiotherapist, after a council meeting at Lugogo, conceded that Uganda is grouped with very powerful countries but with effective training and preparation, the boys can cause some upsets.

“It is a hard group I should humbly admit, but I am confident we can rise to the occasion if we have adequate training and preparation,” Walusimbi said.

Uganda got one win against Canada at the 2004 youth World Cup held in Bangladesh and lost to South Africa, Austria and England.
Justine Ligyalingi, who was re-appointed U-19 team manager, also acknowledged the group was tough but he said the Ugandan lads could cause a few surprises at the meet.

Uganda Cricket Association also named Amos Kyazze and Ronald Kavuma as team managers for the U-15 and national women teams respectively.

Charles Lwanga was named coach for the women team replacing Junior Kwebiiha.

Meanwhile, the national selection committee chaired by Robert Kisubi sat yesterday at Lugogo to name a team of 22 players ahead of the U-19 World Cup.

The squad will be reduced to the final 14 in January to tour Asia for acclimatisation.
