EXCITEMENT gripped the southwestern town of Rukungiri yesterday following the news of the return of FDC party leader Col. Kizza Besigye into the country.

Residents clustered around radio handsets in the town’s streets for updates on Besigye’s return.

Others gathered in bars and restaurants but were disappointed because there was no live telecast of Besigye’s arrival at Entebbe Airport.

He was scheduled to come with BBC and CNN journalists.
Besigye arrived at Entebbe at 9:30am aboard Kenya Airways.

Western local radio stations, Rukungiri FM and Voice of Kigezi, relayed the news of the retired colonel’s return.

In his home village of Rwakabengo, residents treated themselves to a mid-morning beer party amid cheers.

Besigye’s elderly paternal aunt, Justine Beinesente, 100, said, “If only my son had travelled to Rukungiri, Kampala is very far. If the news of his return is true and he finds me alive, I will thank God!”
Close family members who had planned a party for Besigye, said it was delayed because they lacked accurate information about his return.
