IT was a rather confused day at the Edward Kitaka Memorial Sevens tournament, which also served as the last round of the 2005 Sevens Circuit.

Although MTN Heathens captured their third 7s championship in four years, they did it without throwing a ball, as they were knocked out 12-15 at the semi-finals stage by the LG Rhinos.

But, in the other semi-final Celtel Pirates shocked Hima Impis 14-12, and since both front runners did not make it to the finals, Heathens took it on total points won, 104 to 100 for the Impis.

Then in a rather lukewarm Main Cup Final, Pirates held off an argumentative Rhino side 12-5 to win their first trophy ever.

“This has been a very interesting sevens circuit, where each round has been won by a different team,” former Union chairman Paul Sigombe said. “I don’t know if it is because now all the teams are equally good, or if they are equally bad.”

After beating Heathens in the semi-finals, Rhino were bad in the final, and blame should be laid squarely on their captain John Musoke. He argued calls with game officials, and even left the field to do so while play was still going on.

When he came back he continued arguing with the referee, who dully gave him a yellow card. By the time he came back, it was too little, too late, and the Pirates took the day.

In the finals, six-time league champions Mango Kobs needed a sudden death try in extra time to beat Saracens 17-12 in the Plate Final. Pirates’ second side, Sailors, beat KIU 10-5 lift the Bowl, while Impis II beat Rams 17-5.

Next weekend marks the official end of the 2005 season, with the Hima sponsored Makerere 10s at Kyadondo grounds.
