THE tourism minister Daudi Migereko has finally appointed a new board of directors for the Uganda Tourist Board (UTB). The new board was named in Kampala recently.

The board has five new members and three previous members who were retained for
“continuity.”

Ronnie Madhvani, a co-director at the Madhvani Group of Companies heads the board.

Madhivani, a top marketeer, is also the managing director of the Maraasa Holidays, the owners of Mweya Safari Lodge and Paraa Lodges, some of the local popular tourist destinations.

Madhvani replaces Peter Kamya whose tenure expired three years ago.

Madhvani will be deputised by Francis Otille, the proprietor of Sunset Hotels in Jinja.

Otille, an experienced hotelier represents the Uganda Hotel Owners Association.

Otille served as the general manager of the then Jinja-based NYTIL company before retiring into hotel business.

Susan Muhwezi, another member of the Uganda Hotel Owners Association, is also on the board.
Muhwezi is the proprietor of Agip
Motels in Mbarara.

She is also the special presidential advisor on AGOA and trade.
Other members include acclaimed artist Nuwa Nyanzi, the chairman of National Art and Craft Association of Uganda.

Nyanzi represents his association on the UTB board. Dr Gerald Musoke, the deputy executive director of the National Environmental Management Authority as well as Blandina Nshakira, a director at the tourism ministry, are also on the board representing their respective organisation.

Others are Yusuf Mubiru, the general manager of Volcanoes Safaris and James Bahinguza, the UTB general manager.

Mubiru represents the
Association of the Uganda Tourist Operators, while Bahinguza represents the tourist body.

Muhwezi, Nyanzi and Nshakira have served in the previous board.
Madhvani was named in absentia as he was reportedly out of the country.

Bahinguza lauded the structure of the new board, saying it is all
encompassing.

“To have people with such a varied background and wealthy experience on the board, brings a lot of benefits to management and supervision,” he said.
