THE director general of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Jide Mike, last week lauded British American Tobacco’s (BATU) leaf export business for empowering farmers in rural areas while bringing foreign exchange to the economy.

Touring the BATU green leaf threshing plant and export sampling centre in Kampala, Mike said it was through the export of processed agricultural products that manufacturers created rural wealth by adding value to local products.

“BATU’s investment in agriculture and industry helps create jobs, which reduce poverty.

“It also helps in generating foreign revenues,” he said.

Mike is attending a UN Technet Africa Governing Council meeting.
