JOLLY Katongole will not travel to the Commonwealth Games, but has been allowed to take part in other international engagements.

Katongole, who had disappeared in Greece after the 2004 Athens Olympics, early this week apologised to Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) president Maj. Gen. Francis Nyangweso over the incident.

However Nyangweso referred him to Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation. The UOC supremo told Katongole that he deals with sports federations and not individual athletes.

Katongole was scrapped off the boxing team list to the club games, that has Martin Mubiru (fly weight), Salim Bogere (feather weight), for his vanishing act in Athens.

The boxer was later apprehended and sent back to Uganda.

Other pugilists on the Commonwealth team are Solomon Bogere (light weight) and Nicholas Buule (super heavy).

UABF secretary Sande Musoke yesterday confirmed that they had held a meeting with UOC, who advised them to prepare the boxers adequately and also pardon Katongole.

“He was pardoned but he will only go for other international competitions not the Commonwealth. Our quota of four has already been filled,” said Musoke.
“He also advised us to inform athletes that they should handle their issues formally other than disappearing as this does not only dent Uganda’s image but also the image of the African countries in such games.”
