TENSION hangs over Uganda as campaigns, elections, victories and defeats reign in party polls and delegates conferences. Many people do not or cannot sleep. The election stress is spreading.

I have seen more than 50 patients, in the last weeks, exhibiting multiple symptoms and not responding to any drug. Several tests showed normal body functioning till I discovered that they had a stress related problem. Once stress was managed, their health improved.

Although stress is often under looked, it can be fatal if not managed properly. So if you feel sick and exhausted but are not responding to any drug, you are probably stressed.

A certain amount of stress can be beneficial, because it provides a stimulus to action. But too much stress often results in anxiety.

Clinically, anxiety arises when the balance of certain chemicals in the brain is disturbed. The fearful feelings increase brain activity, stimulating the sympathetic nervous system. This often triggers physical symptoms for example breathlessness, palpitations and headaches.

Stress can affect all the organs of the body, especially the heart and cardiovascular system which is obliged to work harder and the immune system which is weakened in favour of other bodily functions. This reduces resistance to infections.

Many drugs (anxiolytics or minor tranquilizers) are often prescribed to alleviate persistent feelings of tension and nervousness caused by stress and other psychological problems. But these drugs cannot resolve the problems because the cause still prevails. Tackling the underlying problem should be the main goal for a long-term solution.

Stress from ongoing activities can therefore be managed through alternative medicine. There are many natural methods of managing stress and, in this article, I intend to concentrate on the lettuce approach.

The ancient Romans ate lettuce at night as a sleep aid after overeating. Today the stressed inhabitants of modern life can benefit from this effect of lettuce.

Ugandans stand a better chance because lettuce is available, cheap and sustainable.

The therapeutic value of lettuce is based on the following components.

  • Provitamin A

  • B group vitamins

  • Vitamin C

  • Minerals

  • Vegetable fibre

  • Sedative and sleep inducing substances.

  • These substances are chemically similar to those from opium, but are completely lacking in toxicity and additive properties. Because of this, lettuce is sedative, sleep inducing, alkaliser and remineraliser.

For politicians, campaigners and supporters, lettuce daily is recommended for managing stress, insomnia and disorders of the nervous system. It can be sliced into small pieces and eaten raw. You may dress it with a little oil and a few drops of lemon juice.

It can also be steamed or boiled. Just avoid over cooking. Have is daily for stability of mind.
