By Charles Ariko A NATIONAL information portal through which information about Uganda can be accessed on the Internet was launched on Tuesday.

Communications minister John Nasasira (right) launched the website: www.ugandaweb.co.ug at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala.

Nasasira said the website would highlight the economic, social and cultural aspects of Uganda, disseminate information about the country and attract development initiatives. He said the website would incorporate all the information collected earlier by the districts and other government organisations from their different websites.

“As the Internet penetrates Ugandan society, ministries and organisations had established websites with varying Internet protocol addresses. I am glad that this national portal will bring all these sites into one resource centre through proper linkages to these websites,” Nasasira said.

He said there was need to break barriers that favoured a tiny fraction of the population that is able to access the Internet to the disadvantage of the larger percentage of the population, who are of low income and are illiterate.

“In Uganda, ICT is dominated by the educated and urban elite. “There is a danger of non-use of services such as telecentres by the targeted local population due to lack of understandable and relevant content,” Nasasira said.
