MBALE district officials on Tuesday rewarded over 200 families in Bukonde sub-county for good household sanitation practices.

The district water officer, Margaret Duca, said the home and village improvement campaign on hygiene and sanitation started in February this year, after the communities affected by cholera and typhoid petitioned the district leadership, asking them to help them overcome the diseases.

She said the worst hit areas were Bulweta, Bumuluya and Lwaso parishes. The campaign targeted 620 households with special emphasis on construction of improved pit latrines, hand-washing facilities, bath shelters, rubbish pits, drying racks and clean water containers.

She said household hygiene and sanitation was now at 81% across Bukonde, which was chosen as the pilot sub- county for the campaign.

The programme cost sh4m and the winners got household items.

Mbale LC5 chairman Bernard Mujasi called upon the residents to keep up the team spirit in keeping their area free from cholera, typhoid and other water borne diseases.
