THE UN peacekeeping operation in the DR Congo, MONUC, has deployed soldiers in the troubled eastern part of the country where the LRA rebels have been sighted.

The MONUC soldiers have been deployed alongside the DR Congo troops in a cordon and search mission, according to a statement issued yesterday by the UN.

The statement said MONUC completed the deployment of 144 troops from the Ituri Brigade on Wednesday.

The troops were deployed in Aba, near the Sudan and Uganda border, 100km north of Ituri’s Aru district, which was the site of massive militia disarmament operations earlier this year.

The UN envoy for the Great Lakes Region based in Kinshasa, William Lacy Swing, said between 100 and 400 fighters of LRA are believed to have entered the DRC last month from their base in the Sudan and were believed to be in Aba, in the northeast district of Haut Uele in the Orientale Province near the Sudan and Uganda borders.

The UN statement said ‘some Ugandan-based soldiers’ were reported to have briefly crossed into the DRC on October 19 in pursuit of the LRA rebels led by Joseph Kony (left).
