THE Democracy Monitoring Group (DEMGroup) has urged for a reasonable system of dispersing demonstrations, to get rid of firing teargas that is disastrous to human beings.

The Rev. Grace Kaiso, the national coordinator of DEMGroup, in a statement on Friday, said, “In line with the Police Statute, the Police should use reasonable force when dispersing riots.”

The public should be granted their constitutional right to assemble, he said.

He asked the public to obey Police instructions when ordered to disperse and endeavour to use alternative methods of protest such as sit-down strikes and displaying placards. He criticised the recent case where a peaceful demonstration by Buganda Kingdom loyalists was dispersed using teargas.

“The violent break-up of the Bataka march to Parliament was retrogressive,” he said.
