A total of 308 students of Arapai Agricultural College in Soroti district were on Friday conferred with diplomas at the 31st graduation ceremony at the college.

The commissioner for Business, Technical, Vocational Education and Training, Eng. Henry Francis Okinyal, who was chief guest, advised graduands to observe professional ethics and discipline while out in the field. Okinyal represented education minister Namirembe Bitamazire.

“Some agriculturalists don’t want to be identified by their professions. I want you to be proud of your work and observe the ethics of an agriculturalist,” Okinyal said.

He called upon the newly-refurbished institution to produce more graduates, especially females. He said 308 who graduated between 2002 and 2005 were too few.

The academic registrar, Dr. Morris Ocweda, said out of the 308 graduands, 259 (84.9%) were male and 49 (15.1%) female. He said they graduated with national diplomas in animal husbandry, crop production and management and animal production and management, a new programme started this academic year.

Okinyal told the principal, Charles Okou Ingole, to make a deliberate effort to attract women to study agriculture. He said 15.1% female output was extremely small.

“It is totally unacceptable. We need to make sure that we are gender-balanced. We should develop deliberate attempts to attract girls into the profession,” Okinyal said.
