MARGARET Nakintu out-sprinted Jane Suuto at the last 150m hilly stretch to successfully defend her MTN Kampala International Marathon title and write a new national record of two hours 48 minutes and 18 seconds.

The Wakiso district athlete had kept behind Suuto until the 150-mark, to take home her third crown in as many marathons after a month’s training in the Nairobi Highlands. She was the only individual champion to defend the crown.

“It was so good. It was hard and the race was fast, most especially the first 21km when I ran 1:13:00,” she said.

On being informed that she had broken Beatrice Ayikoru’s record of 3:06:00 set in November 1989, Nakintu was ecstatic.

“Praise be to God. Holding a national record in my third marathon? I trained but it was the work of the Lord.”

Francis Yiga failed the Kenyan test, finishing fifth in the men’s race.

In the men’s 10km open, the battle was between Wilson Busienei and Moses Kipsiro and the result was determined at the final stretch as Busienei out-sprinted Kipsiro to the finish line by just a second.

“The pace setters gave us a good time,” said Busienei.

The event, sponsored by MTN, got facilitation from DHL, Red Cross, Saracen, Uhuru Restaurant, The New Vision, True African, Coca Cola and Capital FM.
