THE works ministry has earmarked over sh4b for the rehabilitation of Iganga-Jinja highway, Iganga town mayor Constantine Bukyabubi has said.

“Over sh4b would be spent during the rehabilitation of the 80-kilometre highway,” Bukyabubi said this week while inspecting part of the rehabilitated road from Iganga town council to Kakira Sugar Works.

“This road has been a problem to our international traders from Kenya, Zanzibar and other traders within the country,” Bukyabubi said.
He said over 2,000 local traders had shunned the highway because of the risky potholes.

Bukyabubi said the highway was the only shorter and cheaper route to Mombasa and Kisuumu ports.
He said Uganda’s tax base would increase when rehabilitation is complete.

Bukyabubi said the Police Patrol would be on the road 24-hours to strengthen security and control over speeding.

“This would reduce accidents and thefts on the highway.

“There is need to protect our traders and give them good services because it helps our country to develop,” Bukyabubi said.
